January 9th from 1:00 to 3:00 next TDRC meeting

The next meeting for the Tulsa Digital Radio Club will be January 9th from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at the Broken Arrow Central Library (300 W. Broadway).

Featured guest will be Kevin Davidson KD5WVV.  Kevin was instrumental in getting LeFlore County's RMS Express gateway station up, including both Winlink 2000 services, as well as a conventional BPQ32 packet bulletin board system.  Kevin's system is connected via internet to the AE5ME-15 system, giving Tulsa operators the chance to work the Arkansas packet network through our interconnect.  Kevin has approximately 25 people involved in his group in LeFlore county.

We will also demonstrate an open-source digital voice package called "FreeDV", which allows you to operate digital voice on HF in a fairly tight bandwidth (1250 Hz) without having to pay license fees for use of the software, unlike some of the commercial systems such as D-star or DMR.  Don't let the small bandwidth fool you-- FreeDV has near FM sound quality and is not plagued by the noise traditionally found on SSB.  If you would like to read up on FreeDV before the presentation, go to http://freedv.org.
